Gardner Dailey designed the original house in the early ‘60’s on a large wooded site in San Mateo County. The kitchen wing was conceived as the domain for the help and needed updating and rethinking. At the same time, the unifying materials of natural wood siding inside and out, as well as the compositional force of the roof plan had to be preserved.

Visual connection to the Japanese garden was enhanced with new openings and furnishings.
