This family of four wanted a simple low-budget retreat where they could stable their horses and escape the San Francisco summer fog.
The three-acre site had an existing classic California style barn built in the 1940s. The form of the new 2400 square foot residence is designed to profile the barn, but is sited higher up the knoll to take advantage of views to the north and south, and natural breezes from the east and west.
As you enter the house, the main hall can be completely opened at two ends to become a screened porch in the summer: opening to the kitchen and a covered playroom during the wetter months. Color adds a touch of whimsy and warmth connecting it to the landscape.
