Residence | St. Helena, California
The clients, a family of three, who entertain casually and frequently requested a weekend house that in the future, would be their main residence. The site, a hilltop covered with their vineyard, commands great views down the Napa Valley..
The plan was designed with a certain symmetrical formality, but also extends into outdoor rooms on the view side, where most of their time is spent year round. The porches lead on axis to a stone terraced rose garden and pool below which refers back to the view of Lake Hennessey in the distance. Simple well-proportioned spaces and a quiet palette of materials continue the indoor/outdoor quality, and the sense of spaces being larger than they really are. Upstairs, two “sleeping porches” carry through the Bay Region tradition of outdoor living..
