Renovation / Addition in Corte Madera
Our clients had lived at this house for a number of years before contacting us. They needed more space and a total re-organization of the interior.
The house sits up on a knoll, in a quiet cul de sac, with commanding views of San Francisco to the south and Mt. Tamalpais to the west. An oak woodland to the east and a steep landscaped hill to the north required that the existing house footprint remain.
By adding a third floor, we were able to free up the main living level for more entertaining and family activity spaces. We limited the third floor to the east side of the roof, to preserve neighbors’ views on the hills above us. The top floor bedrooms capture more views but with the south and west facing glass also came the need for solar shading to diminish tremendous heat gain that this site, in a wind and fog protected pocket, affords. Large overhangs and a deck with trellis at the top floor assist.
The entry level has their daughter’s play room and connects to the front flat play area.
Aware that our top floor addition on a knoll may need softening, we wrapped the exterior in two tones of cedar siding. The top floor is set back from the front façade and is primarily the darker tone so that its impact is diminished.
