Ranch in Sonoma County
We served as the West Coast Associated Architects for this ranch house sited on a knoll on 600 acres in Sonoma County. Margaret McCurry, FAIA, a principal with Tigerman McCurry Architects in Chicago, was the lead design architect.
The house is designed to serve as a family compound for this couple with two grown children on the East Coast and with extended family in East Asia. It also serves as an artistic retreat for her, an accomplished painter and graphic artist.
Since the original house on the site had burned, it was important to the owners that the new house not only be sustainable, but also very fire resistant. Environmentally friendly zinc siding and roofing meet these requirements as well as harken back to the monolithic wood walls and roofs once used for California agrarian structures, which still dot the landscape below.
The neutral palette of materials inside is punctuated with colorful textiles inspired by the flowers of California native plants.
